A family friend from the high school years on the south shore of Lake Superior just sent me this beautiful Coues Whitetail Deer Skull. Sailor (as is known) came across the fresh carrion of this doe, that was taken down by a mountain lion, while inspecting his property last fall after the Monument Fire in Southern Arizona. Sailor’s property is located between Nogales and Bisbee three miles north of the border where the Sierra Madre Occidental spills into the Arizona dessert. He kept an eye on the carrion over the winter as it was ravaged and scattered by coyotes, crows and other dessert creatures under the blazing sun. This spring the skull was untouched, stripped, and perfectly bleached by the sun.
